Where would you like to go or where have you been that's a wonderful vacation spot? Why? My favorite place, so far, has been the island of St. John, 28 square miles, considered the loveliest of all the Virgin Islands and known as the place where nature takes care of herself. It's got the fewest people and you can only get to it by ferry.

Scuba or snorkle and all that other beach and ocean stuff...

I'm hoping to go on the vampire-themed Transylvania tour next year. I have to reach a whole new level of weirdness and that should do the trick!

Reading through the http://www.dractours.com has raised some concerns. While it is fairly inexpensive ($1700 for the week, everything paid) it looks like most of our time is going to be spent in graveyards. I'd feel funny running through an impoverished country with a bunch of people dressed up like vampires.

Ireland, Scotland, Japan and the Scandinavian countries come to mind. On second thought, Iceland. And probably some more when I really start thinking about it

Malta would also be nice for pure nostalgia (was the home of the Order of the knighs of St. John for quite some time, the whole island shows signs of these times).

Where *don't* I want to go?

I'd love to do a walking & rail tour of Europe. All over Europe, from the Mediterrean north to the Scandanavian countries. At the moment, I'm particularly interested in Italy, southern France, and the Netherlands. But that changes... at other times I've been fascinated by Romania, Germany, Greece, and the ice hotel (Finland?). I want to see all of it.

I'm a Celtophile, so I want to spend a few weeks in the Scottish Highlands and islands.

I want to visit Japan - my first home, I haven't seen it since I was seven, and that's too young to appreciate many things there.

Love the beach, and would like to spend a couple of weeks lying on a warm beach in a tropical place. Any place, the Caribbean, Polynesian islands, Micronesia, Australia... warm beaches and clear blue water is all I need.

I want to go back to New Zealand - this time without bronchitis! - and go cave rafting, bungee jumping, sailing, ski boating, and hiking... all the fun stuff the first time around.

I'd like to someday visit every continent at least once.

My ultimate vacation involves a blend of adventure and lazing about.

I love to tavel but have never really had or taken the opportunity to do so.

I have spent most of my life on the eastcoast of the United States and I have only visited a few of the states on the eastcoast. I flew to Texas once and drove to Ohio once . . . those are probably the furthest destinations that I have been.

In June & in July Jason, Shay and I will be flying to Northern and Southern California.

Someday I would love to visit the Samoa Islands, Japan, China and Amsterdam. Who knows . . . if conditions become any worse in this country I may even move out . . .

The Great Buddha of Kamakura.

Isn't that the buddha that was the only thing left standing of a whole village and temple after some Tsunami hit Japan quite some time ago?

I think so, Tocis. The Buddha reportedly weighs 93 tons.

History of the Great Buddha of Kamakura
Between the years 1147-1189 a woman attendant, named Inadano came to cherish a desire to have a great image of the Buddha. She left court service in order to devote herself to raising funds for the construction of the image. A monk named Joko co-operated with her in fund raising by traveling all over the country and the construction started in 1238.

The first image was a wooden one and it was damaged by a storm. Then it was proposed that the image be made of bronze and the bronze image was completed with a hall to enshrine, but was again destroyed by a storm. Again it was re-constructed but once again it was smashed by a heavy gale in 1368. The fourth construction was also swept away by a tidal wave leaving the image exposed to the sun. Then a big earthquake came in September 1923 but it did not harm the body but destroyed its base which was repaired in 1926.

From another source...

The Great Buddha
The Daibutsu Japan national treasure (the only one in Kamakura), was produced in 1252, and weighs 93 tons. Originally it was housed in a great hall, but this hall was subsequently destroyed by earthquakes and tidal waves.

Descriptions of the hall appeared in ancient books, including "Azuma Kagami," a history book compiled in the Kamakura period (1192-1333). Archeologists also have determined that the hall was smaller than the Buddha hall in Todaiji temple in Nara. The Kamakura municipal government began researching the site in August with a view to having the temple designated as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

So far, archeologists have excavated four sites around the statue with a total area of about 230 square meters. They have so far uncovered the remains of two foundation holes, each about three meters in diameter, located about 20 meters southwest of the statue. Solidified soil that could have supported the foundations of columns was found in the holes. Clay and rocks were placed in alternating layers to a depth of 1.8 meters in the holes to make a solid base.

Judging from the distance between the holes and the statue, the hall is estimated to have been 44 meters wide, almost 40 meters long and more than 20 meters high. It was about 13 meters smaller both in width and length than the hall of the Buddha statue in Nara and was about half as high.

I'm very intrigued by the classical civilizations so I'm definitely interested in Greece (been to Krete already), Turkey, Italy, Malta.
I'd also love to go spend some time in Carcassone, a medeival walled city in the south of France. Not sure why exactly, probably just to immerse myself in the setting and pretend I live in different time and place (also for research, I'm authoring a fictional novel set there).
For the lazy-beach-laying vacation, there is a little island off the coast of the Dominican Rep. that looks great (it has a bare-assed beach too!). A few weeks there every winter would do me a world of good!

Egypt calls... Hurry to me.

In http://http://touregypt.net/egyptantiquities/, Sokar is really one of the more complex Egyptian gods to understand. He is often equated with http://touregypt.net/godsofegypt/osiris.htm, or as the resurrected Osiris though his scope stretches well beyond that over time. Even his name is shrouded in scholarly controversy. One theory is that his name is derived from and based on the term sk r ("cleaning of the mouth") found in http://touregypt.net/featurestories/coffintext.htm Spell 816 and a http://www.touregypt.net/hdyn12.htm papyrus. This term is used in the context of the http://www.touregypt.net/featurestories/open.htm in which Sokar does play a part. Another theory is that the etymology of the god's name comes from one of the http://touregypt.net/featurestories/pyramidtext.htm where Osiris said, as a cry of help to his wife and sister, "Sy k ri", or hurry to me.

That pissed me off also when I was in Italy. I had to go to the bathroom really bad so I searched and searched until I found one and the bathroom attendent (what a horrible job that must me) told me I needed to pay with change. I only had paper money so I had to go look for a place to brewak it. I came back and reluctantly made, but I got them in the end. I was quite liberal with the TP and the soap. I end made a bit of a mess in there and took stole some toilet paper. I know, pretty childish of me, but I figured that if I was going to pay, I better get my money's worth. If you think those toilets are bad, go to Egypt. I have never seen such filth in my life. I almost through up when I went in one bathroom. My advise is go before you leave your hotel room. Also, don't shake anyone's left hand.

Thank you Reach:

You just brought back to life some of my most favorite memories.

My parents loved to travel when my brother, sister and I were little. (There is no better way to see the world than in a camper on the top bunk looking out!) One of our favorite stops was Coquille Oregon. We spent weeks there, making forts out of drift wood and picking up agates off the beach.

Thanks for the flashback.

we are Scotch- Irish

I found no famous people in our line but the Allison / O'Leary family I traced to Scotland way back to the early 1400's

I thought that was pretty cool, I didnt even realize they kept records back then.
My family all seemed shocked about that , having believed themselves to be just plain old Irish
I too would love to visit Scotland, I have a friend there that describes the weather just like the pacific northwest.

I don't have photos on my comp, but a few of my fave places I've been-

La Jolla, CA.... walk on the beach till you're under the pier and just look out under it, its pretty darn nice.

Capri, Italy. Climb to the top of the island and you can see some beautiful things, but the Blue Grotto was probably the most magnificent. Parts of the Tuscan country are quite nice as well.

There was this little tiny town in Spain I went to. It hasn't much changed in a few centuries- obviously they have some of the more modern conveniences like indoor plumbing and electricity. But they still keep the cows on the bottom floor of their homes. They don't have any touristy shops. No one speaks English. They have the quaint rock walls that make Europe so endearing. The one drawback was the stench of the open air meat markets.

But England has always been my fave vacation place. Glad I got to go this summer.

Posted by: Stargazer Aug 20 2004, 08:55 PM
I'd love to go back to Surfers Paradise in Queensland for a month at least and explore - the first and only time I went there was in February 1995, and I had a blast. It'd be nice to go there as an adult. Ireland, Germany, the USA, the Carribbean...so many places spring to mind. I'm actually going to New York and Los Angeles in September, which I'm really looking forward to. It's the part about having to go to England and France beforehand that I'm not looking forward to.

I'm seriously considering becoming a travel agent so I can go to all my dream destinations, instead of just plain dreaming about it...

Tiff,
I recently traced my family

we are Scotch- Irish

I found no famous people in our line but the Allison / O'Leary family I traced to Scotland way back to the early 1400's

I thought that was pretty cool, I didnt even realize they kept records back then.
My family all seemed shocked about that , having believed themselves to be just plain old Irish
I too would love to visit Scotland, I have a friend there that describes the weather just like the pacific northwest.

Oh yeah! The weather is what I would enjoy the most, well, that and the highlands.

Do you know the name of your clan in Scotland / Ireland?

I found this web site once that shows you your family's kilt colors and stripe patterns, I'll have to find it for you.

I dont know, but I'm gonna find out because I dont wanna go around wearing the wrong colored kilt

Can girls wear kilts or do I have to become a crossdresser?

"Scotland" by King Missile

I'd like to go to Scotland,
I'd like to wear a kilt,
I'd like to show off my two legs
And do just what I wilt

I'd like to go to Scotland
And show off my two thighs,
I'd like to wear a minikilt
And poke you in the eyes

I'd like to go to Scotland
And be so very bad,
I'd wear a micro minikilt
of plaid

in the eyes?

Don't ask me. I didn't write it.

Posted by: rainyday8169 Aug 23 2004, 09:42 AM
I guess a poke in the eye is better than no poke at all

Posted by: Muggy Knubber Aug 23 2004, 09:47 AM
That's not what I'd poke, but I guess King Missile would.

One of the first vacations I'm going to take with my daughter when she's old enough, is a road trip of the pac NW.

Fly to Victoria, BC and rent a convertible.

Drive south through olympic national forest, cut over to Mt Hood. Stay at Timberline lodge for a night, then drive down to the coast.

Stay in newport or lincoln city for a night, maybe two.

Then cross over to the east side of the cascades, and stay at the crater lake lodge.

Drive south through Klamath Falls (where I went to college) past mt shasta, back over to the california coast and spend the night again.

Then a nice drive down Highway 1 into San Francisco. Spend a day or two there, then fly home.

Sound fun?
