What did you all think of these photographs? Were they ever debunked or were they for "real"?

Don't even go there, JP. KatieHmm.gif

We see a face on the moon too.

Is it real? WendyDoh.gif

Wow! What could be, if you squint real hard and clap your hands and say "I do believe in fairies!", sort-of faces in the smoke... that existed for at most a couple of frames. Not very convincing.

Posted by: EternalDarkness Mar 10 2005, 12:15 AM
Interesting. In one of the pictures, I can see not one, but two faces in the smoke. One which looks like a human face and one which resembles a dragon. But I happen to have a strong imagination, so I'm putting it down to the power of my own mind to see images in smoke... not to a supernatural occurance.

JP, listen to your big brother Fwee and quit looking for new things to worry about, ok?

I write surrealist fiction and paint surrealist art for a hobby; I see faces, shapes and entities in everything. Doesn't mean I'm gonna bow down and start worshipping them.

Posted by: quicksand Mar 10 2005, 06:36 AM
Fweester makes the point perfectly. Man has historically seen faces on the moon as well as dolphins and human faces on Mars. Pattern recognition is what makes us humans so good at math and science. (Read Demon Hunted world by Carl Sagan for more on this.)

But I see "faces" too in these clouds. Does that mean its of supernatural origin? No.

Humans are born pattern recognizers and this should be no surprise that with the proliferation of cheap cameras and such a horrific event as 911, in the middle of the second largest city in the US, we would get some stills that a pattern, in this case, "faces" were recognized. Also consider what kind of camera(s) that may have shot these pictures, if it had an auto-focus (which locks on to patterns anyway) and auto-shutter, than several dozens pictures can be taken almost instantaneously.

What about the other countless pictures of the billowing smoke that were taken that didn't have faces in them? Why aren't they on the internet? Why aren't we making a big deal about them?

Besides, the "faces" are not even the same. Sure they look menacing, you'd expect that. Collapsing towers are never a good thing. If the same face was in every single picture and in every single frame of video, then we might have something.

But we don't.

Posted by: The Acid Washed Messiah Mar 10 2005, 06:39 AM
Actually, JP... those faces are definitely supernatural in origin.

One is definitely the devil and if you can see it, that means you're going to hell.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't make the rules.

Babies respond very positively to anything that looks even remotely like a face. Two dots in a row and a straight line underneath, for example. It's very abstract, but instantly, the baby thinks, "Human face!" If we weren't constantly on the lookout for human faces - particularly babies - we wouldn't be able to survive for very long.

Relax JP, the world is not ending. There is no demonic struggle for all of mankind that started on September 11. That is unless you call a certain head of state a demonic character who is out to end the world.

Seriously, too many groups are trying to take a random occurrence and use it to their advantage. As others have said we are programmed to recognize faces. If you look close, they really are not very clear faces and are only vaguely human.

If a force was capable of creating a face in the smoke in order to send a message, don't you think that message would be more clear? Would it want us debating whether it is really a face or not? Why not just appear in every flame, every cloud, every smoke plume, every mixed drink? Hell, why not make it easy and just tell us all what it wants? Why not have a prophet (or is that profit) that performs verifiable miracles?

The people who promote that as proof of god, satan, or the magical butt bunny are grasping at straws because that is all they have. If there was any real proof none of us would be doubting.

This reminds me of an art project the teacher had the class do in 7th grade art class.

You took a big piece of watercolor paper, covered it with a layer of water (just get it wet) then put a couple of colors of watercolor paint on in a loose wash and let the paint kind of spread around, it kidn of makes cloudlike formations, big abstract blobs and fields of color with the intensity of color varying here and there. Let that dry. Then, get some india ink and a pen, and look in the clouds on the paper and pick out forms you see in the paint, and sort of emphasize and flesh them out with the pen.

Everybody drew faces everywhere. It was very common to see a finished piece with 20 or 30 faces the student had picked out and emphasized. The human mind has evolved to be very keen on recognizing faces, and gets "false positives" all the time.

Ridiculous!!

Satan was not responsible for the collapse of the World Trade Center, it was those damned homosexuals!

Look again more closely. I see Ellen and Rosy and that prissy blond Queer Eye guy. Let's give credit where credit is due.

I'm a writer/illustrator, and I'm quite aware of this phenomenon myself. My brain is particularly tuned to this sort of thing. I see faces in wood grain, paint textures, carpet fibers, and in all sorts of mundane things. I see other things, too, but they're not messages from above and beyond. I recognize these things as interpretations being made by my own imagination.

It's not as amazing as people make it out to be. It's the human brain picking out a small portion of a random pattern and interpretting it as a face. We're very tuned to the eyes-nose-and-mouth configuration. If you'll notice, practically every face that has ever appeared, whether in smoke or on a grilled cheese sandwich, is almost completely void of detail and it's only the crude configuration of shapes and shadows that make you think that it's a face.

FYI JP, snopes is a site dedicated to debunking shit. It's ironic that you would ask 'have they been debunked?' while linking snopes.... read your own damn link!

Faces appear in nature much more often then you would think . They are all over the place in the form of rock formations in Arizona . If you take some ink and splotch it around it wont be long before you can find something that resembles a face .

Which reminds me Slayer about the recent buzz over neanderthal face carvings/sculptures – which could be just us recognizing the pattern of a human face. (Which is tertiary to the problems that Graham Hancock has with his identification of underwater sites as possible cities of hitherto unknown lost civilizations.)

He claims the rock has been sculpted into faces that look in opposite directions; one is bearded with what Gaietto calls an "expressive face".

If this is genuine, the artist would have been an extinct human species that died out about 150,000 years ago.

The "mask", which is dated to be about 35,000 years old, was recovered on the banks of the Loire in France.

It is about 10 cm tall and wide and has a bone splinter rammed through a hole, making the rock look as if it has eyes.

The jury though, still seems out on these. It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out.
